Kent's Gardener's Calendar

Jobs to do in the Garden in August & September

giant fruitKeep up with the watering. You may not end up with fruit and veg as huge as in the photo, but it will help!

Giving your beds and borders a good soaking every few days is better than watering a small amount every day as this encourages strong root growth. Containers will need daily attention. For ericaceous plants, make sure you use rainwater in hard water areas.

Fruit & Veg: Keep applying fertilizer to your tomato plants. If you're growing them in the greenhouse keep it well ventilated as high temperatures can cause problems. Keep up with picking courgettes & beans to prolong the cropping season. If you're going away remember to pick them just before you go. Plant new strawberry plants.

Flower Gardening: Clip lavender after flowering to stop it becoming straggly. Take cuttings of frost tender plants such as fuchsias.

Pruning: apples, pears, flowering cherries, rambling roses and conifers. Remember most conifers will not sprout from brown wood, so regular pruning is vital. Prune wisteria side shoots to 4-6 leaf joints.

Ponds: Check your fish aren't lacking oxygen during hot spells, if they are gulping at the surface you need to aerate the water. Running a fountain overnight keeps the water aerated but reduces water loss from evaporation.
