Kent's Gardener's Calendar
May really is one of my favourite months in the garden. Glorious rhododendrons and azaleas, beautiful drifts of bluebells, cheery laburnum blossom and everywhere the promise of more to come. Make sure all that tender new growth is protected from slugs with a dose of Nemaslug.
Hopefully we've seen the last of the frost, snow and hail, although there are no guarantees. It's worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast and protecting tender plants if a frost is threatened.
Early to mid May is the time to take soft wood cuttings and to start hardening off plants that you want to plant out towards the end of the month such as bedding plants, tomatoes etc. It's also the right time to plant up hanging baskets and containers. You don't have to confine yourself to flowers either, strawberries and mini trailing tomatoes work well in hanging baskets.
If you have a pond then a bit of spring cleaning might be an idea. Divide clumps that are getting too large. Add a biological bacteria and enzyme booster to give your pond a kick start.
Mid May is usually a good time to plant out dahlias, cannas and summer flowering bulbs.
May is a good time to prune evergreens. Remember when pruning conifers that brown wood will not sprout so if you reveal a brown patch it will stay that way forever. Annual pruning or shearing is really the best policy with conifers. Heathers also benefit from shearing when the flowers have faded. It's also a good time to prune early spring flowering shrubs. Try and prune them as soon as the last of the flowers are over for a good show next year.
